Top Ten Most Overlooked Maine Museums

Right near the top of the list of the ten most overlooked Maine museums is the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. Built by William Lord, the Maine-made brick exterior is virtually unchanged since its construction in 1825. The store’s interior has changed significantly, but you can still see the pulley system used to lift heavy merchandise. Today, the museum offers visitors a look at more than 70,000 artifacts, including maritime papers, estate antiques and paintings from well-known authors and artists, quilts “with secret pouches and handwritten inscriptions”, and one of Maine’s largest collections of World War I and World War II posters. The museum’s treasure trove of historical artifacts includes diaries, family documents, thousands of photographs, newspapers, postcards, commercial records, maps, and architectural renderings. Located on 117 Main Street at the junction of Route 35 and Route 1 in downtown Kennebunk, The Brick Store Museum offers a variety of year-round exhibitions and events.
