How Botrytis Blight Occurs

Ornamental plants are often affected by gray mold or Botrytis blight.  It occurs is many woody ornamentals and almost every herbaceous ornamental.  It can grow as a saprophyte on plants that are dead or dying and as a pathogen that attacks seedlings, bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers.  When the plant’s tissue is damaged by the fungus, it will take on a fuzzy gray appearance.  This is the reason that this disease is also known as gray mold in many regions.  There are a variety of plants that are predisposed to being attacked by the fungus, but environmental conditions can also contribute to its development.
